Playing with Focus

 

Developing focus is a skill that requires practice, just like playing the instrument itself. In this class, you will learn the importance of focus and mindfulness in harp playing and practice and three key practices for improving focus.

Points to consider:

  • How can you start to practice staying in the next moment while you are playing? What will help you focus on what's coming up, rather than dwelling on past mistakes?

  • What word could you use as a refocus word to help make refocusing more automatic during practice sessions, as training for performance settings?

  • Practice starting in random measures to overcome fear of losing place in music.

  • Practice "drive-bys" - playing through music at random times without warming up.

  • Try the Pomodoro technique for practicing.

  • Experiment with "still point" practicing technique for improved focus and mindfulness.
