Developing Flexible Fingers

In this class you will discover how practicing scales and arpeggios with alternate fingerings helps develop flexibility, giving you more choices and the ability to adapt to different musical demands.

Points to consider:

• What can you do in your technique practice to create “Every Finger Readiness”?  Remember that when each finger is developed equally and can “play well” with any of the other fingers, it is easier to express the music.
• Choose a passage from a piece of music you are studying. Can you find three alternative fingerings for that passage, alternatives that would be possible even if they weren't the choices you would usually make?
• Choose a segment of your practice in which you will exercise your ability to recover. In other words, if you have a finger stumble as you are playing a piece, let your fingers do what they can to recover and continue without stopping.
• What exercises could you use to develop pattern recognition? Many exercise books have patterned drills similar to the ones demonstrated on the video. What books do you already have that could help with this?
