Does any of this sound familiar?

  • You find it impossible to concentrate when you play for someone.
  • You worry that you will get distracted and lose your place in the music.
  • You start to play and it feels like someone else is in control of your hands and feet.

If so, it’s time to figure out how to focus!

Focus isn't hocus pocus - there's no magic about it. It's a skill that anyone - and this includes YOU - can learn and practice.

While I know this is true and I practice focus all the time myself, this area is so specialized, I wanted to bring in an expert to share her knowledge and strategies with you.

OUR EXPERT, Dr. Lucy Smith

Dr. Lucy Smith, DMA, is a freelance musician who regularly performs with orchestras across the UK. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Horn Performance and Music Theory from Temple University, a Master of Music from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, a Bachelor of Music from the Royal Northern College of Music, and a Master of Science in Sport and Exercise Psychology from the University of Portsmouth. She is currently pursuing a Professional Doctorate in Sport Psychology.

Dr. Smith's practical training involves working with both athletes and musicians to develop psychological skills such as improving focus, building resilience, and setting effective goals, with an overall focus on wellbeing. Her current research focuses on understanding risk and protective factors for musicians’ mental health and promoting psychologically safe environments in the performing arts. Previous research includes exploring the link between music performance anxiety with mental and physical health, as well as the role of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in music education.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

In this 60 minute clinic you'll learn how to focus on your music so you can finally play your best. Discover the strategies you've been missing that will help you overcome the nerves, dread and distraction, things like:

  • The surprising results possible when you understand the difference between internal focus and external focus.
  • The power of Process Goals and how they will keep your focus on the music (instead of on your grocery list).
  • The step-by-step way to make any piece flow instead of stumble, even when you're nervous.

Just imagine what you can do when you can feel confident that you've prepared your focus, not just your fingers.

SHARPEN YOUR FOCUS, ELEVATE YOUR PERFORMANCE CLINIC

MONDAY, MAY 5TH, 2025 AT 7:30 PM EASTERN

The cost for this clinic is $24.99 and it includes:

  • The live 60 minute group training over Zoom with Dr. Lucy Smith.
  • 30 Day access to the live call recording. (My Harp Mastery members: you will have “forever” access.)
  • A PDF Training Guide to help you take notes and remember key concepts.
  • A Bonus Masterclass and Q&A Session - see below.

On the live call, Dr. Smith will present her insights and share the most effective strategies for creating and sustaining focus in the most nerve-wracking situations. (I’ve been there, and I know you have too!)  Naturally, since this is a live call, you will be able to ask questions and, as time permits, get Dr. Smith’s expert advice on the challenges you face around focus.

Wouldn’t it be great if:

  • You knew how to “keep your wits about you” instead of feeling like your brain is in a fog when you play for someone?
  • You could keep the feelings of fear at bay so your music could flow the way you’ve practiced it?
  • You had a plan for how to practice your focus every day?

You know me - I love a good step-by-step framework and this call will be no exception. I promise you will leave the clinic knowing what you can do to sharpen your focus so you can elevate your playing, whatever kind of playing you love and would love to do with more security and confidence.

BONUS MASTERCLASS and Q and A

Your clinic registration includes a special bonus - the opportunity to attend a masterclass on Monday, May 26th, given by Dr. Smith and me. In this 90 minute masterclass, we will coach three harpists through some of the challenges they are experiencing in performance. The players for the class will be members of our My Harp Mastery and Coaching programs, but attendance at the masterclass is open to everyone who has registered for the clinic.

If you’ve ever attended a masterclass, you know how valuable they are. Being a “fly on the wall” allows you to discover insights that will help you in your own playing. It’s almost like a lesson where you don’t have to play!

This class will also give you the chance to ask followup questions you may have after the clinic. It’s extra learning, included at no extra cost when you sign up for the clinic.

As you probably know, I don’t usually bring in guests, especially non-harpist guests,  to teach at Harp Mastery®. But I felt I needed to make this exception because what you will learn on this call could possibly change the way you approach performing from now on.

But change doesn’t happen just because you sign up for an online class. It happens because you show up and you take action. The first action I want you to take is to commit.

This clinic is your commitment to your harp happiness  - to your confidence in your ability to play the music you love and to play it well in any situation.  Harp happiness is a journey, and like any other journey, it begins with a first step.

Your first step today has three parts:

    1. Sign up for the Sharpen Your Focus Clinic.
    2. Put the date and time on your calendar now. I’ll be sending you reminders, but you want to be sure you have the time reserved. If you can’t be on the call live, you will have access to the replay, but you want to experience this training “in person” if you can.
    3. Start thinking about your focus muscle. Is it working at full strength? When do you feel most focused? When do you feel your focus fails you?

That’s all there is to it. Sign up, get it on your calendar and start thinking about how a little more focus could elevate your playing!
